Nursing home data studies

Each study is built from the same federal files as the home pages, states its method, and comes with the data as a CSV that anyone can reuse with credit. Reporters and researchers can ask the editor desk for a state or county cut.

  • Weekend nurse staffing in nursing homes, by state
Nursing homes staffed 15% fewer nurse hours per resident on weekends in January to March 2026. Every state, the largest chains and 14,470 homes, from CMS daily payroll records.
  • Nursing home fines by state
$454,984,026 in federal fines on 6,510 homes over three years: each state's total, per home and per bed, from the CMS Penalties file.

How the studies are made

Every figure comes from a public CMS file named on the study, read the month it was released, and is recomputed each time the site is rebuilt, so a study never drifts from its source. Where we add things up ourselves (staffing hours by quarter, for example), the study says how, and checks the result against what CMS itself publishes.

The studies compare states, chains and the country. They do not rank individual homes or call any home good or bad: each home's own record is on its page, with the inspection findings in full. Corrections go to the editor desk and are logged on the corrections page.
