State veterans homes: ratings and inspections
123 nursing homes certified by Medicare or Medicaid are veterans homes, in 38 states. 104 are owned by a state government, as CMS lists them. Each one's federal record is below, by state, next to the state's average.

What a State Veterans Home is
State Veterans Homes provide nursing home, domiciliary or adult day care, and they are owned, operated and managed by state governments.VA
To join the program, VA must formally recognize and certify a home as a State Veterans Home.VA
VA surveys every State Veterans Home each year to make sure it still meets VA standards, but VA does not manage the homes.VA
Who can live there, and what it costs
- Eligibility depends on clinical need and whether a bed is available, and each state sets its own admission rules.VA
- Some State Veterans Homes admit non-Veteran spouses and gold star parents; others admit only Veterans.VA
- VA may pay a recognized State Veterans Home to help with the cost of a Veteran's care. What you pay varies by state, and VA does not pay for non-Veterans.VA
- A VA social worker can explain a home's eligibility rules and costs and help with arrangements.VA
- There are State Veterans Homes in all 50 states and Puerto Rico, and the National Association of State Veterans Homes keeps the directory.VA

CMS has no veterans home flag. A home is on this page when its name in the CMS files identifies it as a veterans home (or a soldiers' home, as some older state homes are named), and we check each by hand; names that only share the word, such as a hospital or a street, are left out. A veterans home that is not certified by Medicare or Medicaid is not in the CMS files.
VA Community Living Centers are different
- A VA Community Living Center (CLC) is a VA nursing home. There are more than 100, most on or near a VA medical center campus.VA
- Veterans may stay in a CLC for a short time or, rarely, for the rest of their life, and most stays are short stays after a hospital discharge.VA
- VA provides CLC care when a Veteran meets eligibility rules based on service-connected status, disability and income, and a copay may apply.VA
Community Living Centers are run by VA, not certified by CMS, so they have no CMS star ratings and are not listed here. VA keeps the list of Community Living Centers.
