How Pennsylvania licenses these homes
The Department of Human Services licenses 64 assisted living residences under 55 Pa. Code Chapter 2800, 35 of them with a special care unit, and 991 personal care homes under Chapter 2600. Personal care homes serve older people and also adults with physical, behavioral health or cognitive disabilities, so not every home on this page is for older people.
Pennsylvania personal care homes (PCHs) provide shelter, meals, supervision and help with personal care, typically for older people or people with physical, behavioral health or cognitive disabilities who cannot live safely at home but do not need 24-hour nursing care.pa.gov
Pennsylvania assisted living residences (ALRs) offer all the care a personal care home offers, but may serve people with higher care needs who still do not need 24-hour nursing care.pa.gov
The Department of Human Services licenses personal care homes under 55 Pa. Code Chapter 2600 and assisted living residences under Chapter 2800.pa.gov
Pennsylvania licenses homes for as few as four people and as many as several hundred.pa.gov
